If you've heard of the Webster Technique, chances are someone mentioned it in the same breath as "breech baby." But here's the thing — it's not a baby-turning technique, and it was never about forcing babies to flip. What it actually is is a way to help your body work better, so your baby has the opportunity to move into a good position on their own.
Created by Dr. Larry Webster and carried forward by Dr. Jeanne Ohm, the Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment of the pelvis — focused on balancing the bones, muscles, and ligaments, especially around the sacrum. When we do this, we're not just shifting bones. We're supporting nerve function, easing tension around the uterus, and helping create the conditions for labor to progress more smoothly.
Most moms who come to our office aren't necessarily looking for chiropractic care at first. What they are looking for is a more natural experience — to avoid unnecessary interventions, whether that's an epidural, induction, or c-section. They want their body to be able to do what it was made to do, and they want to feel confident it can.
Why Pelvic Balance Matters
One of the most overlooked pieces of birth prep is pelvic alignment. When the sacrum is out of place, it affects more than posture — it can create tension in the muscles and ligaments that support the uterus, especially the round ligament and uterosacral ligament. When those are pulled unevenly, it's like asking the uterus to stretch and contract while twisted. That tension doesn't just make pregnancy uncomfortable; it can also make it harder for baby to settle into a good position for birth.
With the Webster Technique, we're working on three things at once: helping the nervous system function more clearly (what we call the Power), restoring balance and mobility to the pelvis (the Passage), and giving baby the room they need to move and grow (the Passenger).
What Gets in the Way of a Natural Birth?
Dr. Jeanne Ohm taught that there are three major obstacles that can interfere with a natural, physiological birth — and they come up constantly in our office.
- 01Neuro-BiomechanicalAn imbalanced pelvis limiting the room baby has to move.
- 02EmotionalFear, past trauma, or overwhelm holding the nervous system in stress mode.
- 03Technocratic MindsetThe belief that birth needs to be medically managed to be safe.
Neuro-Biomechanical
When the pelvis is out of balance, baby doesn't have as much space to move. Ligaments become taut, the uterus can't expand as evenly, and sometimes labor doesn't progress as efficiently as it could. Chiropractic adjustments — especially the Webster Technique — help restore mobility and ease soft tissue tension. The result: more comfort for mom, more freedom for baby, more trust in the process.
Emotional
It's easy to underestimate how much our mental and emotional state influences birth. Stress hormones tighten muscles, shorten breath, and send us into survival mode — none of which helps during labor. Chiropractic care can help calm the nervous system and make more room for the parasympathetic, rest-and-digest state labor benefits from. Moms often tell us they feel more grounded and more confident after regular care. We sometimes use gentle cranial work, inspired by Dr. Ohm, to support that emotional side of things too — because birth isn't just physical. It's deeply emotional.
Technocratic
We live in a culture that often treats birth as a problem to be managed rather than a natural process to be supported. Many women are told their body might not "know what to do," or that they need to be monitored, managed, or rescued. It's no wonder trust is hard to find.
In our practice, we help women reconnect with the wisdom of their own bodies — through resources, referrals, and honest conversations about the options they actually have. If someone wants a midwife, a doula, or simply a provider who respects physiologic birth, we're glad to point them in the right direction. The goal is never to "sell" chiropractic care. It's to remind women that they are strong, capable, and supported.
Salutogenic Living: Creating Health from the Inside Out
Most of medicine is built on pathogenesis: find the problem, treat the problem, and once symptoms are gone, call it "healthy." We take a different approach. Our care is rooted in salutogenesis — the creation of health. We focus on the things that make you strong: movement, nourishment, thought, community, and a nervous system that's free to do its job.
That's how we raise healthy kids. That's how we support thriving pregnancies. And that's how we help moms step into birth from a place of trust, not fear.
What Care Looks Like in Our Office
Every mama's journey is different. When someone reaches out to us, we start by listening — to your history, your concerns, and your goals for birth and beyond. We do a full exam, not just of your spine and pelvis, but of how your whole body is adapting to the changes of pregnancy. Then we sit down and walk through everything together and build a care plan that actually fits you.
That usually includes a series of gentle adjustments alongside lifestyle recommendations that support your physical and emotional well-being. We're not here just to "crack backs." We're here to walk alongside you as your body prepares to do something extraordinary. See our full approach to prenatal care →
